How does Bradley cover BIM content in other parts of the world where Revit is not the nominant player in the industry? To what extent is Bradley developing IFC content so that their 3d parametric BIM content can be viewed, used and minipulated by non-Autodesk authoring tools?

    • Our initial focus had been to service the largest group of users of a major BIM platform that requested BIM models of our products…This is how and why they decided to create the Bradley BIM library in Revit.

Next we’ve reviewed the international markets where our manufactured products have certifications. We are negotiating with 2-3 entities that have expressed interest in syndicating the Revit models for our certified products into their country standards.

We’ve been working with our Bradley International Team and their worldwide contacts to understand their BIM model needs. We are finding many with US offices working overseas. The BIM standards have been typically Revit and we communicate the Bradley products that have international certifications for specific locations.

As we connected with the US Army Corps of Engineers in early 2011 to review their Bentley BIM needs, we were informed they were expanding their requirements to include Revit. So our Revit library was timely and acceptable in Revit format for their review.

It wasn’t until recently that we received an ArchiCAD contact with Graphisoft North America that offered input on their needs for building product manufacturer content. Over the last 2 years, we received only a handful of requests for Bradley BIM product models in ArchiCAD format. As we reached out to the ArchiCAD forums and LinkedIn Groups, we were told GDL programming language took care of their needs for BIM components. (Check out the ArchiCAD vs Revit discussion in the ArchiCAD Group…I have several long requests\comments posted in that discussion)

We connected Bradley BIM to e-SPECS earlier this year…they indicated they were signing an agreement to support ArchiCAD processes…that may be another avenue to assist with our MasterSpec and BIM models.

We’ve been testing the IFC process for a couple years. For efficiency, a Bradley Revit model typically incorporates several product model types with unique embedded data for each model variation in one model file. IFC does not process the complete model (with all the embedded types)

The net result is that IFC only processes the model type that is inserted into the Revit facility project.

Which means that if I want to give someone all 24 variations of Bradley Lenox Locker Bench that exists efficiently in one Revit family model, I have to insert and set each occurrence of the model file to each of the 24 variations. Then export the entire Revit project file to an IFC file.

Which is what I’ve done in several situations so the client could retrieve the Bradley product model from an exported Revit project file in IFC format.

This year with the major modeling completed, we’re focusing on the embedded data. Which is where many existing Revit-based firms have expanded their Revit efforts.

Which is why we’ve been attending and communicating with the leaders of the COBie & SPie Initiatives since early 2011
